Discounts

How are you able to discount my electricity bill?

By understanding your electricity usage through our bill analysis service we are able to offer you a discount on the retail component of your bill.

Why don’t you discount my whole bill?

By discounting only the retail component we are offering our customers a fairer deal. Every year the government raises the electricity tariff – both retail and network charges – and when this occurs midterm in a customer's existing contract other retailers pass on both of those increases in the next billing cycle. Because we are discounting the retail component and guaranteeing that rate for 12 months, QEnergy only passes on the network increases and maintains the reduced retail rate we are offering today.

Pricing & Charges

What is the Service to Property Charge?

It may cover part of the costs of providing and maintaining meters, poles, wires and billing and some retail operating costs.

What’s included in the pricing of energy?

A number of factors influence the cost of energy. The price set by your energy retailer includes network costs, the cost of purchasing the electricity and the retail costs.

Network costs

This cost includes the cost of moving the energy from the generators to your home or business. This covers transmission (power lines and pipelines) and distribution costs (charges for the suburban networks supplying homes). These transmission and distribution network charges are regulated by the independent regulator, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). A review of these charges is conducted by 1 July every year.

The energy costs are the actual wholesale cost of purchasing the energy from gas supply and electrical generation companies. We purchase energy from both the wholesale market and through longer term energy contracts with suppliers.

The retail costs cover the cost of supplying energy services to your home or business. This includes billing and revenue collection, administration and customer service, and regulatory compliance and systems.

Why is my bill estimated?

QEnergy will only bill on an estimated read when information from the meter cannot be retrieved, for example the meter is destroyed. The estimations are conducted by an independent third party (your electricity distributor) in accordance with the National Electricity Rules and only done as a last resort.

What is an electricity standard published rate?

The price you pay for electricity is called the standard published rate and is charged as cents per kilowatt-hour. The charge for electricity is open to competition. There is also a fixed service to property charge.

Remember that the charge for the actual electricity you have used is only one part of what you pay. It is often less than half the standard published rate. The rest of the standard published rate is made up of other charges.

 What are "pass through" charges?

It is important to understand that "pass through" charges, which your provider passes on to you, are not fixed charges. Any increases in these charges may be passed through to you.

Tariffs

Why are there different Tariffs?

All premises have a range of appliances & equipment with different usage patterns, some of which can be used in periods where discounted rates are available. Different tariffs are available to provide customers with the most appropriate tariff to reduce their electricity bill.

Tariff 20

Business tariff-  General Supply. This Tariff is suitable for all types of electricity usage. If your operating hours are 9am-5pm this tariff structure could be suitable for you.

Tariff 22

Peak electricity is approximately between 7am and 9pm Monday to Friday. Electricity used outside these hours is charged at the Off-Peak rate. If 30% or more of your electricity consumption is used outside of these hours, than this tariff structure is right for you.

Tariff 11

Domestic  (Lighting, Power & Continuous water heating).

Tariff 31

Tariff 31 is a controlled supply tariff. What this means is the electricity supply is guaranteed for a minimum of 8 hours per day at times set by the network owner (ENERGEX/ERGON) generally between the hours of 10pm and 7am. On some days electricity supply may not be turned off at all. This tariff is about 59% cheaper than your normal domestic tariff. It is designed for storage water heaters and permanently connected heat banks. It can also be used to boost a solar hot water heater.

Tariff 33

Tariff 33 is a controlled supply tariff. What this means is the electricity supply is guaranteed for a minimum of 18 hours per day at times set by the discretion of the network owner (ENERGEX/ERGON). On some days electricity supply may not be turned off at all Applied to suitably sized electric storage water heaters, solar-electric water heaters and heat pump water heaters. You can also use this tariff for other domestic loads such as swimming pool filters, water bed heaters and some freezers, provided they are permanently connected.

Useful Information

What is the difference between a Retailer and a Supplier (Distributor)?

Your electricity retailer is responsible for purchasing electricity on your behalf. Your Distributor owns, operates and maintains the poles and wires and other infrastructure that deliver electricity to the home or business in your local area. Under retail competition you can choose your electricity retailer. However, you cannot change your network distributor.

Can I return to Ergon if I transfer to QEnergy?

Ergon Energy receive government subsidies for regional supply, and are by law unable to compete on price within the market. Therefore cannot retail your electricity after you have changed retailers. QEnergy by law are required to always offer you exactly the same product & price structure after the initial 12 months, to ensure customers remain protected.

What is my NMI?

Your NMI is your National Meter Identifier which can be found on your electricity bill. This is a unique number which is used to identify your electricity meter.

What is deregulation?

Energy deregulation has given businesses the power to shop around. Since July 2007, the energy industry has been open to competition. This means that many small businesses now have a choice about who they buy their electricity from. For more information on deregulation in Queensland, please visit www.thepowertochoose.qld.gov.au
